In the UAE, an expatriate husband acts as the personal sponsor for his dependents; an employer/company cannot directly sponsor a resident's family members. Sponsoring your spouse and children requires a minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000 (or AED 3,000 plus company-provided accommodation), which must be formally validated by a Wages Protection System (WPS) contract or an official salary certificate.
Phase 1: Core Document Attestation & Digital Setup
Before initiating the application through an approved ICP typing center or the smart app, foreign-issued certificates must undergo a strict verification chain:
Consular Attestation: Marriage certificates (for your spouse) and birth certificates (for your children) must be attested by the home country’s Ministry/Consulate.
MoFAIC Attestation: Documents must receive final legal attestation from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Legal Translation: Non-Arabic/Non-English documents must be legally translated into Arabic by a certified professional.
Housing Registration: A valid, registered Sharjah Municipality Tenancy Contract or corporate accommodation assignment letter is mandatory.
Phase 2: Mandatory Document Checklist
The following digital documents must be submitted to the ICP during the initial entry permit registration:
Copy of the Husband’s Passport, valid UAE Residence Visa, and Emirates ID.
Attested Digital Salary Certificate or structured Employment Contract.
Registered Sharjah Tenancy Contract.
Passport copies of the family members (valid for at least 6 months).
2 Recent passport-sized photographs (White background) per dependent.
Fully attested Copies of Marriage and Birth Certificates.
Phase 3: Entry Permit & Status Change
Process: Applications are filed via digital ICP portals or Tasheel/Typing centers.
Timeline: Entry permits are typically approved online within 3 to 10 business days.
Charges: The entry permit costs between AED 500 – AED 1,200. If the family is already inside the UAE, a mandatory "Inside Country Status Change" fee of approximately AED 650 applies to transition them onto the resident track without exiting the country.
Phase 4: Medical Fitness & Emirates ID Processes
Upon entering the UAE or completing the status change, the family has a strict 60-day grace period to complete all residency formalities.
Medical Screening Age Limits: Medical fitness tests are mandatory only for dependents aged 18 and above. Children below 18 are completely exempt from the medical screening.
Medical Fitness Center Charges (Sharjah EHS): Standard residency medical tests (comprising blood panels and chest X-rays) cost between AED 230 – AED 260, with results delivered digitally within 24 to 48 hours.
Emirates ID Application: An Emirates ID application must be typed and biometric parameters registered. The fee is approximately AED 370 for a standard 2-year residency block.
Health Insurance Requirement: Old physical "medical cards" are obsolete. All dependents must have a continuous, mandatory health insurance plan active to approve the residency application. Basic plans begin at roughly AED 800 per annum.
Phase 5: Smart Residency Issuance
Digital Integration: The physical passport sticker is no longer used for standard residencies. Residencies are issued digitally and linked directly to the individual's passport record and smart Emirates ID card.
Final Fees: Final residence permit issuance and digital link processing charges range between AED 500 – AED 700.
Validity: Standard family residencies match the sponsor’s status and are typically issued for 2 years.
