Passport clearance cut to 10 seconds at Dubai Airports

Clearing passport control will take as little as 10 seconds instead of minutes waiting for passport clearance thanks to the system developed by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai.

A high-ranking official at the GDRFA told that by the end of the year, the system will be fully operational in all Dubai Airports at the arrival and departure terminals.

Brigadier Talal Ahmad Al Shanqeti, the general director assistant of Airport Immigration Department at GDRFA-Dubai, said the ‘Next Generation Borders’ system collects details of passengers 48 hours before they board an aircraft.

The system starts to collect the data when a passenger buys an airline ticket.

“We had an agreement with Emirates airlines to update the system with passengers’ details 48 hours before the flight. The system makes necessary checks on passengers to issue clearance and send the details to the passport control officer who will need only 10 seconds to stamp the passport rather than three minutes in the past,” Brigadier Al Shanqeti told

The system has already been fully implemented at Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport while Terminal 1, 2 and Al Maktoum International Airport are expected to be 100 percent ready by end of the year.

“We have 65 employees working in a command room to check the passengers’ details and send clearance to the passport control officer so he only needs to identify the passenger in front of him before stamping his passport. The system works on arrival and departures.”

The passport officer in the past used to take a longer time to identify passengers in situations where a name was similar to someone on the watch list but the new system will reduce waiting time because the passenger had already been securely identified.

“In the past, the officer used to take a minute or more to clear a passenger but the new system helps the officer to clear four passengers in a minute,” Brigadier Al Shanqeti added.

He said that even if the passenger makes a last minute booking, his details will be in the system an hour before the flight timing.

“There has been an increase of seven to nine percent in a number of passengers travelling through Dubai airport and the new system will help decrease clearance time for passengers and make them happy,” he said.

The GDRFA Dubai has 1,600 passport control officers working round the clock. “In Dubai, a passport control officer clears 55,000 passengers per year on an average while globally the ratio is 17,000 passengers. With the new system in place, better results will be achieved.”

Brigadier Al Shanqeti praised the officers’ work at a ceremony held to recognise their efforts.

Last year, an officer topped the list for clearing 133,000 passengers in a year.

UAE Wallet smartphone app is your passport in Dubai Airport

Passengers departing from Dubai International Airport can now use their smartphones at the smart gates instead of their passports as part of a new service called Smart UAE Wallet. Lt General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of the police and public security in Dubai and Major-General Mohammad Ahmad Al Merri, director-general of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA Dubai), launched the project in cooperation with Emirates airline at the Dubai International Airport on Tuesday.

The new facility is expected to reduce departure clearance time to between 9 and 12 seconds per passenger. For now, the UAE Wallet app can be used in Terminal 3. It will be operational in all terminals after the wallet is linked with other airlines. “The Smart Wallet will save passengers’ time and also protect their documents and passport. Passengers will only need to use the smartphone at the smart gates and scan their fingerprint [to finish the departure procedure] with ease,” Lt Gen Tamim said.

In the initial phase, the UAE Wallet will contain the personal ID, passport details, and smart gate card data of the traveller. “The second phase will link all the data of Emiratis and residents into the wallet so people don’t need to show their documents when transacting in any government department. The individual will show the barcode inside the phone to share his data and finish the transaction in seconds,” he added.

People can download the app from the Apple store. “The application is safe and has security checks. The developers said it is impossible to hack or misuse the application,” Lt Gen Tamim said.

Brigadier Talal Al Shanqiti, the assistant to the director-general for ports affairs at GDRFA Dubai, said:” Passengers will only need to scan the barcode on their smartphones at the smart gates and scan a fingerprint to complete the process in 9 to 12 seconds. Emiratis and residents represent 55 per cent of people using Dubai Airports and the UAE Wallet will reduce traffic at all gates.” Sami Akilan of Emirates airline, said: “Passengers don’t need to carry their passport now, even the boarding pass because all the data registered in the system including the name, seat number and flight number is linked to the wallet. This will reduce the time and effort.

New Amer Centres for Visa process replace 600 typing Centres in Dubai by November 1

A new UAE Vision visa system, which allows residents to complete all visa and residency transactions at typing centres, is operational now through the first such centre in Al Muhaisnah 4 area in Dubai.

Residents are urged to contact the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) via new Amer centres for visa transactions to cut time and effort. The GDRFA Dubai yesterday opened the first of the 50 Amer Business Centres which will replace nearly 600 typing centres in the near future.

Residents are no longer required to visit the GDRFA in order to renew or apply for visas. Instead, all transactions will be carried out through the approved Amer centres. Major-General Mohammad Ahmad Al Merri, director-general of GDRFA Dubai, said the Amer centres will replace the typing centres by November 1 this year and provide many services for residents at one place.

“We want to make people’s lives easier in Dubai by finishing their transactions at one place. At this centre, we have all our services and other government services,” Maj-Gen Al Merri said.

He said they aim to keep their services on a par with technological advancements to expedite and simplify all transactions.

With the new system, residents are no longer required to visit the GDRFA headquarters or any of its external branches to renew or apply for visas.

The transactions include applying for a visa, renewing residency, applying for new residency, visa cancellation and other related services.

According to the GDRFA, there have been no changes in the required documents or charges for visa transactions.
“Typing centres are crowded now and they must change the way of providing services by having proper space and not delay the residents, tourists and businessmen in their transactions,” Maj-Gen Al Merri added.

Major Salem Mohammad Bin Ali, director of Amer Client Happiness Department at GDRFA Dubai, told Gulf News that they received 25 requests from businessmen to open Amer centres and four such centres will be opened soon.

“The Amer centres will provide services of a slew of other government entities as well like Department of Economy Development, Dubai Municipality and Emirates Identity Authority. They will replace the current typing centres. We will have employees from GDRFA Dubai working in these centres,” Major Bin Ali said. The Amer Centre launched in Muhaisnah can serve 2,000 people every day and the working hours for the moment will be from 8 am to 3 pm, but after Ramadan, the hours will be from 8 am to 8 pm.

People can contact Amer Service call centre on 8005111 for further details.

Dubai Visa System through Typing centres

The UAE Vision System, a new visa system which allows residents to apply and renew visas directly through typing centres without the need of visiting the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), has been officially adopted by a number of typing centers in Dubai.

One such centre even launched a toll-free number on Wednesday to help with the new system. ID Card Centre, located in Deira, launched its 800 IDCARD (800 432273) hotline on Wednesday. The hotline is available in Arabic, English, Hindi, and Malayalam, to help customers enquiring about the new ‘UAE Vision’ system. It allows customers to schedule the pickup and delivery of their visa-related documents through Zajel courier at a convenient location.

With the unveiling of the UAE Vision system earlier this month, residents are no longer required to visit the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs headquarters or any of its external branches in order to renew or apply for visas. Instead, all transactions will be carried out through the approved typing centres.

The transactions include applying for visa, renewing residency, applying for new residency, and visa cancellation, in addition to any other related services. According to a GDRFA official, there have been no changes to the required documents or charges related to the visa transactions.

“When customers visit typing centres, they need to look out for the Amer logo,” a GDRFA official said. “The logo will be clearly visible on the counters and on the staff uniform. The logo is a badge of approval from the GDRFA, indicating that the typing centre is qualified to carry out visa-related transactions through the UAE Vision system.”

Speaking on the delivery of new services to customers, Esmail Ebrahim, managing director of ID Card Centre, said, “Keeping with the government’s efforts of digitization and technological development, we decided to offer our customers services that will make the visa application processes more convenient and less frustrating.”

The other related services the centre offers range from documentation for medical tests, attestation, legal translation, and wages protection system (WPS).

Jailab Abdullah, marketing manager of the centre, said the centre is equipped with facilities as per the GDRFA standards. “To be accredited by the GDRFA, the typing centres need to have a space of at least 1500 square metres, a token system, security and camera systems and a waiting area,” he said, adding that the centre aims to make visa application procedures as efficient as possible for customers.

Elaborating on the new system, Colonel Hussain Ebrahim, assistant of the director-general for administrative support at the GDRFA, earlier said: “The UAE Vision System is a new system where public members will be able to visit any of the typing service offices and submit their transactions without having to visit the GDRFA building or any of the centres to complete their transactions as everything will be done at the typing centre only.”

Visa applicants are urged to provide accurate contact information to typing centres. Those who apply for visit visa-related transactions will have it sent to their email and those applying for residency visa service will have it sent to them via Zajel courier service, Col Ebrahim explained.

Zajel counters will be available at all approved typing centres. Those applying for residency visas can hand over their passport to the counter after the application process is complete. The Zajel courier service will deliver the customer’s passport once the visa is issued and stamped.
